Neste primeiro episódio, De Onde Vieram os Cães (Where Dogs Came From), conhecemos mais sobre a origem do cães, não apenas seu parentesco mais direto com o lobo cinzento – com quem compartilha 99,96 % do DNA – como também com toda a família canídea, desde o plioceno. O autor nos revela as contradições entre as ciências quando o assunto é período da domesticação: as que são baseadas na arqueologia (que estimam 14 mil anos) e as que se firmam suas bases na genética (que chega a 100 mil anos); e desfaz alguns mitos sobre o comportamento dos lobos e dos cães. De acordo com o pesquisador, a domesticação é a chave para se falar sobre o nosso cão, porém, nem por isso devemos desconsiderar a biologia e entender profundamente seu processo evolutivo. Acredita-se hoje na possibilidade de uma coevolução entre humanos e cães (principalmente quando falamos do homem moderno).
